How to Donate | How Your Donations Help

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.

Cy Pres

The term "Cy Pres" comes from a French term meaning "as near as possible." So-called “cy pres” awards are designated when there are residual funds in class action lawsuits, probate matters, and other court cases that cannot be distributed to the class members or beneficiaries for a variety of reasons. Courts solve this problem by making cy pres awards available to appropriate nonprofit charitable organizations.

Riverside Legal Aid is a proper recipient of cy pres funds in California class actions according to California Code of Civil Procedure § 384. Under that law, any non-profit organization that provides "civil legal services to the indigent "is a proper recipient of cy pres funds. Riverside Legal Aid is such a non-profit organization and is therefore an appropriate designee of cy pres funds for almost any type of class action in California state court.

These funds make a significant difference in the lives of low-income Riverside County Residents who desperately need free legal assistance for safety, shelter, and well-being.
